Childhood vaccinations against Covid-19 is emerging as a challenging topic around the world, raising multiple issues regarding evidence, ethics and equity.

MedSecure will present two topics early in September 2021 which will incorporate the latest international thinking on this issue.

Part A of this topic will cover the general principles relating to informed consent regarding children in South Africa. Part A will be released on 10 September 2021.

Part B will deal with specific principles relating to childhood vaccinations against Covid-19, including: the current evidence base for benefits and possible adverse effects in children; the societal benefits and costs of childhood vaccinations, the ethics of vaccinating groups for whom most of the benefit accrues for other sections in society, as well as a comment on the ethics of vaccinating very low-risk individuals in high income countries at the potential expense of high-risk individuals in low and middle income countries. Part B will be released on 12 September 2021.
